How to Open Zip Files

If a download includes multiple files, we provide it as a ZIP file. Using a ZIP file prevents you from having to download each file separately. You will need to unzip this file before using the files it contains.

What Is a ZIP File?

A ZIP file is a compressed file format that allows multiple files to be delivered as a single file. It functions similar to a folder on your computer, but you will need to unzip the ZIP file before using the files it contains. Unzipping is decompressing the files contained in the ZIP file so the individual files can be used.

Mac and Windows can unzip files without additional software. If you are using a mobile device such as an iPhone, iPad, or Android phone or tablet, you may need to download an app from your app store.

Macs

  1. Double click on the ZIP file.
  2. The files will be unzipped into the same folder where the ZIP file is located.

Alternate method for Macs:

  1. Right click on the zip file.
  2. Select "Open with."
  3. Click on "Archive Utility." The Archive Utility will then unzip your file to the same folder as your zip file.

Windows

  1. Right click on the zip file.
  2. Click on "Extract all" (the wording may vary slightly depending on the version of Windows). This will open a new window with options for extracting the files.
  3. Choose a destination (folder) where you want to extract the files. The default destination is the folder where you saved the zip file. Skip to the next step unless you prefer to extract to a different folder. To choose a different folder, click the Browse button, select a folder, and click OK.
  4. Click the Extract button (the button may be labeled Next for earlier versions of Windows). View the extracted files in the destination folder after the extraction completes.

Android and iOS

You can do this in two ways:

  • App: Search your app store to find an app that will unzip a zip file. You will need to read support materials for each specific app for further instructions.
  • Desktop: Unzip the file on a desktop or laptop and transfer the unzipped files to your mobile device.

Please note that we are unable to recommend specific apps or offer support for using them.

Other Operating Systems

If your operating system isn't listed, or these instructions don't work for you, please search Google for information on unzipping files on your device.
